How we do it
When we are recording, we place musicians around the room in a seating configuration which mimics stereo orchestral placement. We then record each part separately and doubling/tripling it using multiple instruments/microphones/positioning in order to avoid a buildup of unwanted frequencies and present a genuine orchestral or quartet feel. We even leave other instruments on the vacant seats to add sympathetic resonance to simulate the players in an orchestra/quartet. After MUCH experimentation this gives our clients the best of all worlds. It combines all the sonic benefits of group playing with the flexibility of being able to manipulate the individual parts. If for some reason, you’d prefer a recording where everyone plays at once, we can organise that as well. At the end of the process you will receive a stereo file as well as a series of stems for violin 1, violin 2, Viola, Cello etc. This allows you to adjust the balances and panning when mixing. This super flexible approach gels well with the tweaking manner in which records are made today.
